Discuss the importance of Smoke Detectors- Use the flyer in the Home SAFE Home Tool Kit on Smoke Detector Tips.
Check out the Escaping a Fire Tip sheet in the Tool Kit.
Break the children into groups and assign them a room to draw in a house. Have them identify possible places or problems where fires could start, i.e. the basement with a pile or rags, or the bedroom with overloaded sockets. Have each group present their drawing and explain the possible dangers.
Have Students draw a plan of their house and note escape routes for each room. The Sparky the Dog website http://www.sparky.org/family.html provides an escape planning grid which you can download, as well as, a Home Safety Checklist.
Ask the children to create a Home SAFE Home Safety Check List to bring home.
Tell the students to take the tip sheets and their escape plan home to share with their family.
