Holiday Cheer for AIDS Patients

Your club can bring cheer to patients with AIDS living in Coler-Goldwater Hospital in New York City through Kids Care Clubs Holiday Cheer for AIDS Paitients.

The patients at Coler-Goldwater are very poor. Some do not have any other place to go, while they are being treated, and some do not receive any visits from their families or friends.

Throughout the year, the Sisters of the Fraternité Notre Dame, of Harlem, New York, visit the 200 women and men afflicted with AIDS. During the Holiday Season they would like to provide the patients with a small holiday gift of toiletries, socks or T-shirts. A long time partner of Kids Care Clubs, they have asked for our help to cheer up patients during the Holidays and to let them know that someone cares.

Your club can adapt this project to a local agency that serves people with AIDS.

Materials Needed: All Items Must be New!

  • Toiletries – Regular or hotel size
  • Shampoo and conditioner
  • Soaps
  • Creams and lotions
  • Deodorant
  • Chapstick
  • Socks
  • Slipper Socks
  • T-Shirts or Undershirts
  • Ribbons and bows

Steps Involved:

  1. Ask the children what they think it would be like to be spend the holidays in the hospital? (While this is a collection for adults, you can check out the book, “You Can Call Me Willy – A Story for Children about AIDS,” by Joan C. Verniero, written for children ages 4-8. It explains some of the difficulties children face living with AIDS. )
  2. Advertise in your organization’s newspaper, make posters and flyers – put the dates of the collection, the location and where the items are going.
  3. Decorate and place collection boxes in convenient locations.
  4. Make homemade Holiday cards and drawings. These are as important as the toiletries.
  5. Your club can put ribbons and bows on the larger items and attach the card. If your club receives a lot of hotel sized items, package them in plastic baggies or cellophane and tie with ribbon.
  6. Box the items and the holiday cards from your club members.
  7. Mail your boxes to Kids Care Clubs or directly to Fraternité Notre Dame by December 31st:
