Act

In addition to project ideas found in Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. your club could do the following:

Walk and Serve

Walking and marching was a key strategy in securing civil rights. In 1955, Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her seat to a white person on a Montgomery, Alabama bus. In protest, the black people of Montgomery walked for over a year instead of riding the bus.

In Selma and Birmingham adults and children walked and marched to demand their civil rights. Children as well as adults were arrested. At one point 600 children were in jail in Birmingham; the youngest child arrested was six years old.

After the election of President Barack Obama, the following words were heard in the media:

"Rosa sat,
so Martin could walk,
so Obama could rise,
so our children could fly!"*

Your club can honor Dr. King and all the people who walked for equality and justice by a symbolic walk followed by a service project.

You can walk in your school, around your school or in your neighborhood. You can make signs with quotes from Dr. King or slogans of peace. See 31 Days of Peace, Kindness and Justice quotes.

*Slaves referred to "flying" as securing freedom in the North.
