Souper Bowl of Caring

Your Kids Care Club can turn Super Bowl Sunday into a Souper Bowl of Caring by collecting Soup and Crackers for local food pantries and soup kitchens.

In professional American football, the Super Bowl is the championship game of the National Football League (NFL). The game and its ancillary festivities constitute Super Bowl Sunday. It is the most-watched U.S. television broadcast of the year, and Super Bowl Sunday is the second-largest U.S. food consumption day, following Thanksgiving.*

With that thought in mind, that Super Bowl Sunday is the second-largest day of food consumption in America, why not help those who do not have enough to eat and depend on food pantries and soup kitchens to feed their families. Across America, food pantries and soup kitchens are experiencing record numbers of families needing their services as well as record numbers of supply shortages. Your club can help with a simple collection of soup and crackers!

Materials Needed:

Posters and flyers advertising your collection
Collection boxes
Cans of soup or stews
Crackers

Steps Involved:

  1. Call a local food pantry or soup kitchen and tell them about your collection. Ask if they will need your club's help in stocking the shelves with their collection.
  2. Make posters and flyers, listing dates, times and location of your collection. List the recipient of your collection.
  3. Distribute flyers to all members of your sponsoring organization. They can distribute flyers to friends and family. If their family is having a Super Bowl Party, guests can be asked to bring a few cans of soup and boxes of crackers.
  4. Turn your collection into a friendly competition among classes, or break the school into two teams, with the names of the teams competing this year. Who will win the Kids Care Clubs Souper Bowl of Caring by collecting the most cans of soup?
  5. Collect and count all of your cans starting the Monday after the Super Bowl.
  6. Announce the winner (If you have turned it into a competition) and make a poster noting the total number of items collected as well as congratulating the winning class or team.
  7. Take a photo of your club and the Souper Bowl of Caring Collection. Submit it to your local newspaper. It could inspire others to help hungry families.
  8. Deliver your items. If possible, tour the food pantry or soup kitchen and re-stock the shelves.
