The Wildcat's Kids Care Club of Walkerton Elementary School in
Walkerton, IN had two special guests at their monthly meeting. Their invited guests were Kathy Taylor and her service dog, Janet. Kathy held a demonstration of some of the many tasks that Janet performs for her. Janet is trained to work with the hearing impaired, so she helps Kathy answer the phone or the door. She even picks up her keys if she happens to drop them.
Kathy, like many other disabled Americans received her service dog from Canine Companions for Independence (CCI). Receiving her service dog changed Kathy’s life. Because service dogs cost approximately $50,000 each to raise and train, but are free to the owners, the students and staff at Walkerton Elementary held a Pennies for Puppies Campaign. In one weeks time, they raised an outstanding $517.74 that was donated to Canine Companions for Independence.
The Kids Care Club members learned a lot from Kathy and Janet. "I had no idea how much a dog could do for someone," stated one member, "Janet and Kathy make an awesome team!"
